Draft #2 Summary Response

We look at introductions. How is yours?

Draft #1 and Grammar Final

You take the Grammar Final.

Then you read drafts.

Homework:

Draft #2 is due Friday.  Use the comment sheets to help you know what is needed in your paper.

Summary/Response Fri

Check Comma Tests.

Look at Summary/Response.  We mark your copies of the reading up.  Then you get the assignment sheets for Summary/Response. You have already created rough drafts.  Now is the time to start turning them into the First Draft, which is due on Wednesday.
Grammar practice.

Homework:

1.  On Wednesday bring Draft #1 of your Summary/Response to "On Dumpster Diving."  It must be typed.

2.  Wednesday will be the Grammar Final.

Summary/Response

We correct page 233 in Brushup.

You work on pages 91-94.

We look at your summaries.  Do you give his name and the title of the essay?  List the main points on the board.

Time to freewrite:  what is your reaction to Eighner's information?

Practice quiz.

Homework:

1.  Write one or two paragraphs of your opinion about the article "On Dumpster Diving."  Comment on some of the details in his essay  and the ideas he shares.  Bring it Friday, either handwritten or typed.

2.  Do Tests 3 and 4 pages 97 and 98.

Summary/Response

We check grammar work.  You do some in-class tests.

We look at Seeing the Pattern, writing a summary.

I hand out the new version of "On Dumpster Diving" and you read and annotate it.

Homework:


1. Bring a one to two paragraph summary of the handout version of "On Dumpster Diving" to class.  It can be either typed or hand-written. Have your annotated copy of the article with you.

2.  In Brushup do page 233.

Final Version Comparison Essay Due

Hand in your papers.

We discuss pronouns and you find them in your old papers.

We work on Test 1 and 2 on pages 85-86.

We look at "On Dumpster Diving" again.

We check Wednesday's Review Quiz.  You do another Review Quiz.

Homework:

1.  Do Tests 3 and 4 pages 87-88 in Brushup.

Draft #2 Comparison

We check Tests 4 and 5.

You do Test 6 handout to hand in.

You take a review quiz and we check it.

Writing Comparison/Contrast

 Brainstorm paper topics. I read  "A Taste of Snow"  and we look at #2 page 320.

1.  Read and do Tests 2 and 3 in Brushup pages 77-78.

2.  Write Draft #1 of your Comparison/Contrast paper.

Final Version Process Analysis Due

You organize your papers.  Before you hand them in, you circle any transition words you used.  Then you double underline at least one compound sentence and one complex sentence.

Quiz over fragments.

Look at page 292 in Seeing the Pattern and follow instructions.

Then we look at pages 299 and 300.

Homework:

1. Read "We've Got the Dirt on Guy Brains" by Dave Barry pages 311-312 in Seeing the Pattern.

Draft #2 Process Analysis

We check Tests 1 and 2 pages 65-66.

You do Test 3 and check. 

We discuss having a thesis in your draft. We look at page 36 in Seeing the Pattern. Also transitions.

Read drafts.

Homework:


1.  Create the final version of your Process Analysis paper.  Edit carefully.


2.  Do Tests 4 and 5 pages 69-70 in Brush Up.

Draft #1 Process Due

Do Test 5 page 57;  we check it.

Do Test 6 to hand in.

We do some test questions.  Now you do some.

We discuss transitions between details and steps -- see page 60 in Seeing the Pattern.

And you read drafts.

Homework:

1.  Read and do pages 59-64 and Tests 1 and 2 pages 65-66 for Monday.

2.  Work on Draft #2 for Monday.

Compound/Complex Sentences and a Process

You do some work in Brush Up.
Then you read the handout:  "The Dare"

1.  Create the first draft of your Process Paper.

Final Version Due

We go over Test 1 and 2 pages 53-54.

We discuss punctuation for compound and complex sentences.

Hand in Remembering papers.

Read Chapter 8 page 243 and write a paragraph.

Then we read "How the Oscars Work" on pages 244-247.

Homework:

1.  Create a different sentence for each of the pairs in Test 2 page 54.  Write these in your daybook.

2.  Cover one full page in your daybook brainstorming about a process "how-to" or "how-it-works" that you could write.  You need a topic that could take up two to three pages.

Draft #2 Remembering Fri

We check Tests 5 and 6 pages 47-48.  You take a quiz over subject/verb agreement.

Look at the grading grid.  What will help people's papers get "A's"?

You read each other's drafts.

1.  Create the Final Version of your Remembering essay, due Monday.

2.  Do Tests 1 and 2 pages 53-54.

We go over Test 3 and 4.

We talk about sentence types.

You build some sentences.

The Remembering Paper

We talk about pages 39-42 in Brush Up.

You do Test 1 and 2 and we check.

Then we talk about the Remembering essay, and read pages 112-114 in Seeing the Pattern.

Homework:

1. You write Draft #1 of your Remembering essay.  You should have at least two pages to bring to class.

2.  Do Tests 3, 4, 5 and 6 on pages 45-48 for Wednesday.

Final Version Due

We go over Tests 5 and 6.

You edit your papers before you turn them in.

We read pages 118-119 in Seeing the Pattern.  In your daybook write about either #1 or #2 under "Reacting to the Topic" on page 121.

  You take a quiz over homophones.

1.  Do pages 39-42 about Subject-Verb Agreement in Brush Up.

Reading Draft #2

We check the tests you did for homework.

You read each other's drafts.

We talk about revising and editing.

Homework:

1.  You create the Final Version of your Description essay. Bring both drafts and all comment sheets to turn in as well.

2.  Do Tests 5 and 6 pages 151-152.  There will be a quiz on homophones on Friday.

Reading Draft #1

We practice Homonyms., looking at pages 143-146.  You create an index card for each of the homonyms you confuse.

Then you each read and write about two papers.

Then we talk about sentence types. 


Homework:

1. Revise your draft.  Add detail, think about the beginning and the ending, think about making a point about what you're showing us.

2.  Do Tests 1, 2, 3 and 4 on homonyms, pages 147-150.

Putting Together a Rough Draft

Homonyms? We practiced using too/to and two and there/they're/their

We look at Tests 5 and 6 pages 37 and 38.

We look again at "A View from the Bridge".  You copy down paragraph 35 in your daybook. Which fish?

We talk about writing a draft and what you are describing.


Homework:

1.  Bring Draft #1 of your Descriptive paper.

2.  In Brush Up do page 143 on homonyms and read page 144 and do the practice on page 145.  Be ready to practice these. Concentrate!

More About Description

Verbs? We go over verb tests 2,3 and 4.

We read pages 127-129 in Pattern. You discuss in groups.

Homework:


1.  I have shaded many of the subjects in the handout of "A View from the Bridge."  You read through and underline twice each verb that goes with a shaded subject.

2.  Do Tests 5 and 6 on pages 37 and 38 of Brush Up.

Description

Look at this picture.  Spend some time in your daybook describing what you see in as much detail as possible.

Then we read pages 163-165 in Pattern.  We discuss.

I give you the assignment sheet for your first paper.

We work on the verb tests, pages 33-38 in Brush Up.

Homework:

1. Begin observing something that you will describe in your first paper.  Be a "spy" and take notes.  You need to have at least one full page of notes in your daybook about the subject you are observing.

2.  Do Verb Tests #2,3 and 4  pages 34-36 in Brush Up.

Lego Build #2

First of all, we review subjects and verbs. Then we check Tests 1 and 2.

Then you do Test 3 and 4 in less than 10 minutes.

Then you build each other's objects once again.

All related papers get handed in.

Homework:

1.  In your daybook do a freewrite about the whole Lego assignment.  Fill up a page discussing what made it easy or hard, difficulties you had, or ways you can think it does or does not relate to real-world writing.  Perhaps you could describe the stages you went through as you did the assignment.

2.  Do Tests 5 and 6 pages 25,26.

3.  Do page 27 and Practices 1, 2, 3 and 4 on pages 29-32.

Build Your Legos #1

We talk about subjects and verbs. Put on the board your scores for Pratice 1 and 2.

Then we work on creating some sentences and labelling subjects and verbs.

Then you build each other's projects.

Homework:

1.  Make notes on the "Revise Your Directions" sheet about possible ways to improve your directions.  Then make changes in your typed directions, and bring both the new and old directions to class on Friday.  You'll build with the revised directions on Friday and then turn all the material in on Friday.

2.  Do Tests 1 and 2 pages 21,22 over Subjects and Verbs.

Purpose, Audience, Genre

First of all, we go over the Practice exercises in the Introduction to Brush Up.

Then we discuss audience, purpose and genre in the real world and in class.

I give you the Lego assignment, and you get started.

At the end of class we look at Subjuects and Verbs on page 17 in Brush Up. 

Homework:

1.  Finish creating your written instructions, and type them up for Wednesday, when two students will try to follow your instructions and build your object.

2.  Do page 17 in Brush Up and Practice 1 and Practice 2 on pages 19 and 20. 

Diagnostic Test

Today you take the diagnostic test.  There is no grade for this;  we're finding out where you need practice.

When you finish, quietly hand in your test, and read pages 4-6 in Patterns.

If you have time, go back and read page 3.  In your daybook, write down the list of words as explained on page 3.

Homework:

1.  In your daybook write a freewrite that fills one page on the topic of the photograph on page 3 of the text.  Remember, in a freewrite you can take off in any direction as you are writing.

2.  In Brushup do the practice exercises on pages 3-13 ( Practice 1-12).  DO NOT read the explanations before each secion.  Just follow the directions and see how well you can do.  If you wish, you may read explanations for difficult sections.  Do check you answers when you are done and clearly mark which ones you miss.
