Summary/Response Fri

Check Comma Tests.

Look at Summary/Response.  We mark your copies of the reading up.  Then you get the assignment sheets for Summary/Response. You have already created rough drafts.  Now is the time to start turning them into the First Draft, which is due on Wednesday.

Homework:

1.  On Wednesday bring Draft #1 of your Summary/Response to "On Dumpster Diving."  It must be typed.

2.  Wednesday will be the Grammar Final.

1. Begin observing something that you will describe in your first paper.  Be a "spy" and take notes.  You need to have at least one full page of notes in your daybook about the subject you are observing.

Lego Build #2

First of all, we review subjects and verbs. Then we check Tests 1 and 2.

Then you do Test 3 and 4 in less than 10 minutes.

Then you build each other's objects once again.

All related papers get handed in.

Homework:

1.  In your daybook do a freewrite about the whole Lego assignment.  Fill up a page discussing what made it easy or hard, difficulties you had, or ways you can think it does or does not relate to real-world writing.  Perhaps you could describe the stages you went through as you did the assignment.

2.  Do Tests 5 and 6 pages 25,26.

3.  Do page 27 and Practices 1, 2, 3 and 4 on pages 29-32.

Build Your Legos #1

We talk about subjects and verbs. Put on the board your scores for Pratice 1 and 2.

Then we work on creating some sentences and labelling subjects and verbs.

Then you build each other's projects.

Homework:

1.  Make notes on the "Revise Your Directions" sheet about possible ways to improve your directions.  Then make changes in your typed directions, and bring both the new and old directions to class on Friday.  You'll build with the revised directions on Friday and then turn all the material in on Friday.

Purpose, Audience, Genre

First of all, we go over the Practice exercises in the Introduction to Brush Up.

Then we discuss audience, purpose and genre in the real world and in class.

I give you the Lego assignment, and you get started.

At the end of class we look at Subjuects and Verbs on page 17 in Brush Up. 

Homework:

1.  Finish creating your written instructions, and type them up for Wednesday, when two students will try to follow your instructions and build your object.

2.  Do page 17 in Brush Up and Practice 1 and Practice 2 on pages 19 and 20.

Diagnostic Test

Today you take the diagnostic test.  There is no grade for this;  we're finding out where you need practice.

When you finish, quietly hand in your test, and read pages 4-6 in Patterns.

If you have time, go back and read page 3.  In your daybook, write down the list of words as explained on page 3.

Homework:

1.  In your daybook write a freewrite that fills one page on the topic of the photograph on page 3 of the text.  Remember, in a freewrite you can take off in any direction as you are writing.

2.  In Brushup do the practice exercises on pages 3-13 ( Practice 1-12).  DO NOT read the explanations before each secion.  Just follow the directions and see how well you can do.  If you wish, you may read explanations for difficult sections.  Do check you answers when you are done and clearly mark which ones you miss.

We look at the course information, and you do some writing.
